Dear Chairman Grassley and Ranking Member Leahy:

The Collaborative for Effective Prescription Opioid Policies (CEPOP) involves over 60 diverse organizations working toward a comprehensive and balanced policy strategy to reduce prescription opioid abuse and promote treatment options.  The undersigned members of CEPOP are writing to encourage the Committee’s action on S. 524, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2015 (CARA).

As you know, prescription drug abuse is a growing public health crisis.  Approximately 6.1 million Americans abuse or misuse prescription drugs and more than 60 Americans die every day from a prescription drug overdose. Press Release: CEPOP Calls For Additional Action to Address the Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 9, 2016) – The Collaborative for Effective Prescription Opioid Policies (CEPOP) today commends President Obama for his proposal to address prescription drug misuse in his Fiscal Year 2017 Budget.  CEPOP also calls for additional action including appointing a leader for this effort, investing in prevention, and increasing access to rescue medications to reverse overdoses and treatment to prevent relapses.  Due to the magnitude of this crisis across the country, the private sector and all levels of government must commit to work together to find additional ways to reduce the opioid abuse epidemic.  […]
