CDC Data Detail Disparities in Overdose Deaths
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday issued another Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, this time providing details on overdose death rates by race, ethnicity, and county-level social determinants of health. CDC analyzed data from the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System from 25 states and the District of Columbia and found that American Indian, Alaska Native, and Black persons experienced the highest increases in drug overdose death rates during 2019 – 2020. Data showed that, compared to the previous year, drug overdose death rates increased by 44% among Black persons and 39% among American Indian or Alaska Native persons. The data also suggest that income inequality, unequal access to treatment, and treatment biases may have exacerbated these inequities. CDC notes that, to reduce inequities, prevention programs should include evidence-based, culturally responsive interventions and account for co-occurring polysubstance use and social determinants of health.
